Goal(s)

Learning outcomes :

  • Lead (and participate in) a scientific debate;
  • Define a series of tests in order to characterize a printing defect;
  • Build hypotheses out of the analysis of a sample;
  • Diagnose a product with printing defects;
  • Write an expertise report including hypotheses and solution tracks.

Content(s)

This course implies problem-based learning.
3 phases :

  • carry out a bibliographic research and use the "5M" method to determine which tests to carry out. Build hypotheses.
  • Prepare and participate in a scientific debate in order to find an agreement on the origin of the defect.
  • Write a report on the expertise.
    Deliverables are produced at each step of the process and add up to constitute most of the final report.

Depending on applicable sanitary constraints, the sessions (including the scientific debate) may be held at a distance.

Prerequisites

  • Mastering paper, printing and converting processes, equipments and materials involved.
  • Mastering the scientific and technical English language .
  • Mastering bibliographic research methods and tools.
  • Understanding English (course taught in English).

Test

  • Specific credits: this course brings 1.5 ECTS to students in Print sciences processes & materials

The course is taught in English.

Grading is divided into 3 parts composing a note out of 20 points :

  • Participation of the student group in the scientific debate (oral)/ 6 points.
  • Production of a synthetic document including the defect description, the results of the 5M method applied to this defect, the explained choice of tests to carry out , a protocol for one printability test, an analysis of the results and the position facing the arguments during the debate. The document is given to the teacher in paper format and in digital format (put on the Chamilo platform) before a given deadline./ 12 points.
  • Individual involvement / 2 points.

Can be made up in case of a justified extended absence.

  • Participation du groupe au débat scientifique (Oral) / 6 points
  • Rédaction du document de synthèse / 12 points
  • Participation individuelle / 2 points.
