STIRRING & FILTRATION
Basic knowledge for :

  • the selection and design of stirred tanks
  • the screen filtration of liquids.

1. Introduction : unit operations and process engineering

  • Fluid mechanics : basic knowledge (Flow in pipes, Flow around immerged objects)
  • Tutorials

2. Stirring and mixing

  • Mixing operations in liquid/solid, liquid/gas and liquid/liquid systems
  • Definition of a stirred vessel
  • Global parameters of a mixing system
  • Local parameters of a mixing system
  • Scale-up of stirred vessels
  • Tutorials

3. Liquid filtration

  • Fluid flow through porous media
  • Screen filtration at a constant volumetric flowrate
  • Screen filtration at a constant pressure drop
  • Tutorials

Prerequisites

Fluid Mechanics
Fundamentals and Concepts in Transport Phenomena

Tests

Assessment and evaluation procedure: written exam. The students have to write a summary of the course (1 to 3 handwritten two-sided pages)that they can use during the exam. The complete course as well as the documents distributed by the professor and the corrected tutorials are not allowed for the exam.

Exam duration: 1.5 hour

Exam can be retaken in second exam session.
