The BIO3 project is geared towards producing biosourced wood-based compounds for the food and chemical industries at the Fibre Excellence St-Gaudens paper plant.

This project is supported within the scope of the FUI interministerial fund's 19th call for projects. Led by Fibre Excellence, this 4-year project involves five industrial partners and two academic partners (Grenoble INP-Pagora and ENSIACET) in a public/private collaborative research programme, and will include the construction of a pilot biorefinery.

In the longer term, an extension of the Fibre Excellence pilot on an industrial scale could bear significant economic fruit in terms of job creation and securing the future of the Saint-Gaudens production site. Environmental and societal benefits are also expected, given that the products developed will offer sustainable alternatives to products stemming from fossil sources and agriculture.

Accredited by Agri Sud-Ouest Innovation, the BIO3 project is also co-accredited by the Axelera, IAR Industries & Agro-Ressources and Xylofutur competitive clusters.

This is a crucial project for Grenoble INP-Pagora and its research laboratory, LGP2, because the construction of this pilot plant gives tangible form to the research conducted over the last few years by the Biorefinery: chemistry and eco-processes research team, led by Christine Chirat, Associate Professor, in conjunction with some of the project's partners. It will also serve as a tool for future research, not least the two PhDs that are currently being funded.
