Green carbon and circular economy, new keys of development

The inevitable depletion of fossil fuels, and particularly oil, is a major global issue. It's urgent to replace not only the source of energy but also the products derived from petrochemicals (which accounted for 400 million tonnes in 2010).

To contribute to the future generations well-being, the world of Pagora is built from bio-based materials (from renewable resources), recyclable (circular economy) and with intelligent functions.

Our planet generates between 100 and 200 billion tons of plant biomass per year. The amount mobilized today is 0.5 to 1 billion tons per year. This plant biomass, consisting of 50% cellulose, is an extraordinary raw material: it's natural, renewable, recyclable (70% of paper and cardboard are recycled in Europe in 2011), it has remarkable properties and can be transformed, functionalized and valued, with a generally neutral carbon footprint.

Promises of a changing world

The coming decades will experience a considerable development of production processes enhancing plant biomass. Indeed, the extraction of the cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin allows, beyond their converting in paper pulp, to produce:
  • Energy (2nd generation biofuels, from non-food resources, biogas)
  • Bioproducts (chemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, food)
  • Biomaterials (including paper and paperboard, biopolymers and bio-composites) can be functionalized to impart mechanical, optical, barrier or electronic properties.
This functionalization can notably through printing processes able to produce these new materials at very competitive costs and with reduced environmental impact and thus, to open important markets in the field of electronics and cross media communication.

  • Valuation of natural or industrial waste.
  • Functionalization of surfaces to produce smart materials with high added value.
  • Environmental management...

As strategic skills that graduates from Grenoble INP-Pagora develop, especially valuable skills that are scarce and they play a fundamental role in the enhancement of plant biomass and its derivatives.
