Goal(s)
Learning outcomes :
- To nderstand the influence of a unitary operation (refining) on the physical properties of pulp and paper
- To know the main properties of paper material
- To list and state the relevant structural properties: porosity, thickness, weight, mass volume
- To understand structural anisotropy: knowing measurement methods and how to present its influence on physical properties
- To analyze the main physical characteristics of the paper material (mechanical, permeability, splintering, roughness, tearing absorption)
- to be able to understand the coloration of paper

Content(s)
Address and assimilate the main properties of paper material.
To be able to understand the influence of a unitary operation (refining) on physical properties.
- In a first step, structure properties are discussed: Porosity, thickness, basis weight, porosity.
- Structural anisotropy: measurement and influence on physical properties.
- The main physical properties of the paper material are then analysed. The following main properties are discussed: mechanical, permeability, bursting, roughness, tearing, absorption.
The influence of a particular unit operation, refining, on the physical properties of paper is discussed.
The practical work, mainly dedicated to refining, illustrates the lectures.
In parallel to the courses, tutorials on color reproduction and a project on the "simulation of a physical property of fibrous supports" are to be done.
