The objective of the Technical Association of the Graphic Arts (TAGA) is to disseminate research themes and promote the advancement of print communication techniques. Since their inception in 1985, the Student Chapters have produced technical publications presenting research by students in the fields of graphic technology.

Since 1993, the best publications have been awarded prizes. Each year, the Helmut Kipphan Student Publication Award distinguishes the Student Chapter author of a publication that excels in technical content, print quality and design. In addition, several Student Publication Special Recognition Awards are awarded to Chapters that have demonstrated their ability in specific categories: Best in Technical Writing; Best in Publication Design; Best in Production Quality; Best in Electronic Publication; Attendee’s Choice.
