Content(s)

Mechanisms governing the flocculation and coagulation of colloidal suspensions.
Operation and process of liquid-solid separation processes by settling and filtration.
Modeling of these processes.
Dimensions of these processes.
Main existing techniques and technologies for carrying out such separation operations on an industrial scale.

FILTRATION
Understanding and modeling of fluid flow in porous media
Filtration on support (cake filtration): mass balance and kinetics law; design and sizing of a filter press and rotary drum filter.
Deep bed filtration (depth filtration): modeling the evolution of the filter (clogging, retention and concentration profiles) and design of a sand filter.

SETTLING
• Presentation of the laws and phenomena governing the sedimentation of solid particles
- Discrete settling for isolated particles (Stokes, Allen or Newton law)
- Flocculent settling in the case of dilute suspension
- Zone settling for concentrated suspension (Kynch theory)
• Design and sizing of settling tanks.

Key words
Decanter, falling speed, sizing

Prerequisites

FILTRATION: Mass balances; Bases of pipeline hydraulics

SETTLING: Mass balances; Bases of hydrodynamics (drag force, equations of convection-diffusion-dispersion)

Test

A 2 hours written exam (1h for each part).
Written notes authorized. Copies of books or previous exams are banned.
Examination compensatable.

part I (Decantion) : mark N1
part II (Filtration) : mark N2
At the discretion of teachers, “random” or “surprised” test can be asked to the students during the course. The mark will be N3 . It will then be included in the calculation of the average mark with a 0.1 coefficient on the final note.

N = moyenne(N1, N2)*0.7 + 0.3 N3
