Goal(s)

Learning outcomes :

  • To know the steps of the elementary operations of the distribution of the suspension, and the unit of formation of the sheet followed by the pressing of the wet sheet
    (drying in another module)
  • To understand the elementary physical processes in detail, to demonstrate the relevance of the control variables to the engineer, and present these variables
  • To understand the steps of physical analysis of elementary operations as they occur from suspension distribution to sheet formation and pressing: conventional vs. hydraulic headboxes; main flat table type training unit with all its draining elements before and after the water line (pontoons, scrapers, vacuum scrapers, suction boxes); double cloth type training units, top formers, hybrid formers
  • To present the technologies considered in relation to the underlying physical principles
  • To know the theoretical elements on which to base the formation of cartons on submerged units, multi-tables and on the pressing of the wet paper sheet

Content(s)

Definition and analyze of the elementary papermaking operations, the semester S4 is devoted to the analysis of the pulp distribution, the sheet formation and the wet pressing. The drying operation is not included in this course. The analysis consists in describing the physical processes by the mean of a knowledge model, in order to fing the pertinent control or acting variables for the papermaking engineer.

The content comprises the analysis of the papermaking operations from the pulp distribution, to the sheet formation and the wet pressing. We hence analyze the headboxes (classical, hydraulic), the sheet forming unit as the Fourdrinier papermachine (single wire machine) with the drainage devices (drainage rolls, foils, vacufoils, suction boxes), before and after the wet line. Then we continue our analysis by the twin wire papermachines, the top-former and the hybrid formers. The cardboard manufacturing is also studied with the immersed forming unit and the multi-tables. The last part of the course is devoted to the analysis of the wet pressing. The different technologies presented are criticized considering the physical principles described.
