Goals

Learning outcomes :

  • To know the processes of biomass fractionation and their impact on wood compounds;
  • To propose processes according to the raw material;
  • To use vegetable raw materials instead of fossil raw materials when appropriate.

Content

Acquire knowledge about the different types of biorefineries that exist and are being developed. The manufacturing routes for the main bioproducts and biofuels will be studied for each type of biorefinery.

General introduction
Chap 1. Chemical constituants of vegetal biomasses used in biorefineries
Chap 2 : Introduction to petrol based refinery and petrochemistry
Chap 3. First generation biorefineries based on starch and vegetal oil : processes, bioproducts, biofuels.
Chap 4. Second generation biorefineries based on lignocellulosic biomasses: processes, bioproducts, biofuels.
The following processes will be studied : alkaline processes, acid processes, organosolv processes, steam explosion processes, introduction to thermochemical processes

Targeted skills: developing solutions and innovation; managing a process or system; acting for sustainable development



Prerequisites

Wood chemistry course (Year 1) – Course on the Processes of production of chemical and mechanical fibers (Year 2)
