Goals

  • To understand how energy is transferred to the material and how fatal heat can be recovered
  • To understand the technological choices and settings according to specific situations
  • To perform a critical analysis of an installation
  • To select equipment according to specifications

Content

1. Physical principles and mechanisms of thermal drying. The different modes of energy transfer.

2. Humid air properties.

3. Contact drying : multicylinder drying and Yankee drying

  • Industrial applications
  • Modelling, heat transfer coefficients, technologies and global data
  • Steam distribution and condensate removal
  • Organisation of the steam and condensate system
  • Drying section hood
  • Energy recovery
  • Dryer fabrics.

4. External convection drying

  • Industrial applications
  • Modelling, transfer coefficients, technologies and data.

5. Internal convection drying

  • Industrial applications
  • Modelling, transfer coefficients, technologies and data.

6. Radiation drying

  • Industrial application
  • Modelling, transfer coefficients, technologies and data.

7. Combination of drying techniques.

In addition to the lectures, the contents of the course is put in practice during tutorials and also, but not for the apprentice students, during lab sessions (4FME3054).

Thermodynamics (1st year)
Energetics (1st year)
Mass transfer (1st year)
Fluid mechanics (1st year)

Knowledge of the paper making process upstream of the drying section is desirable

Tests

Exam and tutorials.

Second exam session : individual exam only, in the same conditions as the first session.



Devoir surveillé écrit (N1) et TD (N2) :

N = 0.7 x N1 + 0.3 x N2
