Goals

Learning outcomes :

  • To know and understand the consequences of the non-Newtonian nature of certain fluids on the sizing of a circuit or the optimization of operating conditions.
  • To understand non-Newtonian fluid flows in laminar and turbulent regimes (rheology, pressure drop, velocity profiles)
  • To know how to characterize a valve (the different types of valves, pressure drop coefficient and flow coefficient, fields of use, case of liquids and steam, noise in the valves)
  • To know how to choose a valve to ensure flow control (know how to choose them according to fluids and flow conditions)
  • To understand the balance of a hydraulic circuit to optimize a hydraulic circuit or operating conditions
  • To know the particularities of the behaviour of flowing fibrous suspensions, biological sewage sludge, coating dispersions and inks.

Content

To understand the flow of a non-Newtonian fluid in terms piping design or operating conditions.
To be able to select a valve (for a compressible or incompressible fluid).

A. Laminar and turbulent flows of non-Newtonian fluids

  • Rheological behaviour of incompressible fluids
  • Velocity profiles
  • Noise in a valve

B. Valves

  • Types of valves
  • Head loss coefficient and flow coefficient
  • Flow of incompressible and compressible fluids in a valve
  • Noise in a valve.

C. Pipe networks.

D. Examples: fibre suspensions, biological sludges, coating suspensions, inks.



Prerequisites

Introduction to fluid mechanics
Introduction to rheology (recommended)

Tests

Written exam + exercices or homework

Catch-up modalities (catch-up session): supervised written assignment under the same conditions as in a normal session.



Devoir surveillé écrit (N1/14pts) et exercices ou devoir à la maison (N2/6pts) :

N = N1 + N2.
