Learning outcomes :

  • Master the operation of the offset process and in particular the interactions between the various phenomena involved;
  • Know the materials and consumables (fountain solution, plates, blankets) associated with this process (excluding inks);
  • Know the characteristics and operation of the different types of offset presses (sheet-fed, web-fed);
  • Recognize printing defects related to these presses and develop the method for diagnosing them (observation, use of tools, interpretation);
  • Optimize the use of the offset process.



A-Principles of the offset lithographic process : dampening, inking, transfer.
B-Materials and consumables used : dampening solution, plates, blankets
C-Offset lithographic presses
D-Characteristic defects of offset lithographic presses.

Three sessions of applied work complete this course on the SHeetfed Offset Training Simulator (SHOTS)and teach students how to diagnose printing problems in offset lithography. The exercises deal with production situations where problems appear progressively.
The first session is supervised by the teacher, in order to learn the diagnosis methodology.
The following sessions put students in production situations where problems appear progressively. The second session is also supervised by the teacher (in order to avoid any risk of being stuck in a given situation). The third session is led by students in autonomy but requires that students install a portable computer in a room with a beamer and giving access to the network (the software being accessible via the networkà.
Availability of the software (especially the allowed number of simultaneous connections) or schedule constraints may change the sessions organization.
A 1-hour plenary session enables to synthesize the difficulties faced during the work in autonomy .

According to applicable sanitary constraints, the sessions may be held at distance.

The course is taught in English.

A joint evaluation is proposed for the offset printing, flexography and digital processes courses.
Can be made up in case of a justified absence.

In case of sanitary constraint, the exam will take place remotely (multiple choice questionnaire on line).

Grading of the practical work : the methodology used by each group of students to solve problems during their self training on the simulator is taken into account.
The exercises on the simulator will be corrected in a plenary session.

The practical work on the simulator can be made up in case of a justified absence if access to the simulator on the "cloud" remains possible.

La note de TP tient compte de la méthode de diagnostic employée, de l'utilisation de l'aide au diagnostic, du nombre de problèmes résolus, et d'éventuels problèmes rencontrés par le logiciel.

The grade of the practical work takes into account the diagnosis method used, the use of the software help, the number of problems solved and possible software bugs.

La note du DS est une évaluation commune aux trois cours : Flexographie, offset, procédés numériques.

Les éventuels effluents sont collectés pour être évacués par des prestataires spécialisés / interdiction d'évacuer les effluents dans les réseaux communs.

If work around an industrial press : respect the safety rules described by the teacher : no "floating" clothes, attach long hair, etc.
If effluents are generated, they are to be collected by specialized companies and shoould not be thrown into the sink or sewage.
