ECTS 2.3
Goal(s)
Knowledge of the chemical and biochemical processes for the production of biofuels
Knowledge of the issues, state of development, perspectives and key players in the research and industrial production.
Content(s)
After describing the context of the development of biofuels and their market, the production processes of bioethanol and biodiesel from first and second generation (from lignocellulosic substrates) are presented. The main technological barriers are identified. Prospects for development of a third generation (from algae) are discussed. Elements to assess the environmental impact of biofuels and achieve an economic balance are given. The main actors and the latest pilot and industrial achievements are mentioned.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of the structure of lignocellulosic substrates. Basic knowledge of the structure, characteristics and chemistry of the main constituents of plants and on the mode of action of enzymes and bacteria.
