Goals

The aim of this course is to give a comprehensive introduction to risk analysis and risk assessment and to present the main methods for such analyses.
Methods and models are presented to answer to the 3 main questions of a risk analysis on a process

-What can go wrong? (Identification of hazardous events that can cause harm to some assets of interest)
-What is the likelihood of that happening? (qualitative or quantitative statements ; causal analysis to identify the causes of an hazardous event)
-What are the consequences? (Identification and quantification of potential harm or adverse consequences to the assets of interest)

Content

Outline of the course : Risk Assessment & Management

Introduction & Basic Notions. What is risk ? Presentation of the basic conceptual model (bowtie model)
The words of risk analysis : introduction of some of the main concepts in risk analysis (Risk, Hazardous event, Accident scenario, Asset, Consequence, Severity, Accident, …)
Hazards and Threats
Risk Metrics and Risk Acceptance (How do we measure risk? )
Hazard Identification Methods : Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) , Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP)?
Development of accident scenarios (consequences analysis) : Event tree analysis?
Causal and frequency analysis : Fault tree analysis?

The introduced concepts and methods are illustrated on exercises and have to be implemented on a case study in small project groups
