Goal(s)
Learning outcomes :
- To know the chemistry used in the different bleaching processes;
- To develop a bleaching sequence according to the desired characteristics;
- To characterize the environmental impact of bleaching according to the processes used
Christine CHIRAT
Content(s)
Knowledge of pulp bleaching processes (chemical and mechanical pulp) and cellulose for chemical or textile use: bleaching agent chemistry (mechanisms of action on lignin and carbohydrates), processes (equipment), environmental aspects related to bleaching.
1. Bleaching of chemical pulps
Introduction and history of bleaching
Constituants of chemical pulps that impact bleaching
Different types of equipment needed for bleaching
Study of the different bleaching stages including , for each, the three following aspects : reaction mechanisms of the bleaching chemical on pulp components; technological aspects ; environmental aspects (when relevant). Bleaching stages studied : chlorine stage (C), chlorine dioxide (D), oxygen (O), extraction stages (E, Ep, Eo, Eop), Z (Z), peracetic acid (Pa) and enzymes.
2. Bleaching of mechanical pulps
Constituants of chemical pulps that impact bleaching
Oxidative bleaching (hydrogen peroxide) : reaction mechanisms, technological aspects
Reductive bleaching (sodium dithionite) : reaction mechanisms, technological aspects
Targeted skills: developing solutions and innovation; managing a process or system; acting for sustainable development
