ECTS 15.0
Goal(s)
Acquire the basics of fibre and paper properties.
Assimilate the vocabulary introduced, in particular that relating to mechanical properties.
Learning outcomes :
- To list the main properties of fibres and papers, using appropriate vocabulary (especially that relating to mechanical properties)
- To state the characteristics of the paper and cardboard (mass per square metre, moisture, thickness, mass volume, density and porosity)
- To state morphological characteristics of the fibres in a paper (nature, walking direction vs. crosswise, felt rib vs. canvas)
- To combine physical characteristics and density to optimize quality (permeability, fiber anisotropy)
- To present the main methods of measuring the paper structure
- To state the factors that characterize and can therefore influence the strength of the paper: Degree of polymerization (DP), Length of rupture (LR), Fiber strength, Fibres and bonds, Bursting - Tearing - Pulling - Load content, water content.

Content(s)
Introduction of paper and cardboard characteristics
Mass per square meter, moisture, thickness, density and porosity.
Examples of relationship between physical properties and density.
Quality optimization.
Permeability.
Anisotropy of the distribution in orientation of the fibres in the plane.
Nature of the fibres.
Factors characterizing or influencing paper strength
Degree of polymerization (DP).
Rupture length (LR).
Fiber resistance.
Fibres and bonds.
Bursting - Tearing - Tension.
Structure characterization technique: mercury porosimetry
Five Practical Exercise sessions allowing physical measurements on industrial papers complete the course. Mechanical properties (traction, tearing, bursting) and contexture characterization (thickness, grammage, porosity, permeability) are studied.
