Goal(s)
Learning outcomes:
- To understand the effects of a unitary operation (refining) on the properties of fibers, fiber suspensions, and papers,
- To establish relationships between refining and the properties of fibers and fiber suspensions,
- To establish relationships between the properties of fibers and fiber suspensions and the ones of manufactured papers,
- To consolidate knowledge in paper physics through practical sessions.
Theses practical sessions are associated to the 4FMT1011: Pulp and paper physics course.

Practical sessions on the following themes:
- Refining a paper pulp,
- Characterization of refined fibers and fibrous suspensions,
- Paper sheets manufacturing,
- Characterization of structural, optical and mechanical properties of papers.
Prerequisites: paper physics course from PAGORA 1st year.

Course and exam language adapted to the student profile.
Practical sessions are carried out by groups of 2 to 3 students. This course will be evaluated through the writing of a scientific report per group summarizing the work carried out during practical sessions. The grade may be lowered individually according to the following criteria: low involvement during or outside the sessions, unjustified absences, problems with punctuality or not wearing PPE. Penalties may also be imposed for a late submission of the report or for leaving dirty workstations at the end of sessions.
Students also have the possibility to submit, algonside the scientific report, a text describing the organization of the group and their role in the group during the project. If the text is well written and consistent with the teacher's assessment, it can serve as proof for the validation of the level 2 of the C4 Pagora engineering skill and increase the grade of the report by up to one point. Submitting a text is not mandatory.
Practical sessions cannot be retaken (even for a justified absence).
The summary report can be retaken. Retake is individual.

Environmental security
Les élèves n'ayant pas suivi la formation sécurité lors de l'intégration à Pagora ne sont pas autorisés à manipuler en TP
Pendant le TP il est nécessaire de respecter les consignes de sécurité énoncées au démarrage de l’activité.
En particulier l'utilisation du massicot peut représenter un risque de coupure :
- il est nécessaire de manipuler selon le protocole présenté en séance
- il est nécessaire de rabaisser les lames après utilisation.
